Section Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Real Estate Probate and Trust Law Section ("REPTL"), the largest section of the State Bar of Texas. The Section will provide regular updates on its programs and activities along with informational eblasts to advise of significant developments in the law or your practice requirements. While we begin working on our proposed legislation for the 2019 legislative session, many of the laws enacted during this past session will become effective resulting in changes to our practices. Links to the legislative updates for the 2017 legislative session for estate and trust and real estate are available through these hyperlinks as well as on the Legislative Updates page on the Members Only area of our website. (Keep in mind that the Members Only area of our website is password protected.)

Our Section also awards grants to organizations that provide fundamental legal services for Texans who are underserved by the legal system in the areas of real estate, probate, elder, and veteran's law. Information about this program is available on the Grant Program page of our website. A list of standing committees for the Section, and a description of their work, is available on the Public side of the REPTL website.

Listed below are just a few of the benefits you receive with your membership. Please let us know if there are additional benefits or services we can provide to you.

REPTL Reporter: The Reporter is delivered to you quarterly and provides a wealth of information, including case law updates and articles in the areas of real estate, probate, trust, and elder law.

Legislative Activity: The Section is one of the more active sections of the State Bar at the legislature – we believe it is important to protect and advance our practice areas. The Section drafts and submits (with State Bar approval) legislation that consistently benefits our practice areas as well as the clients we serve.

During the legislative session, the RELAC committee (Real Estate Legislative Affairs Committee) tracks legislation and members of the Section help educate lawmakers on certain bills.

The ETLAC committee (Estate and Trust Legislative Affairs Committee) not only tracts legislation, but actively pursues the passage of legislative proposals relating to decedents' estates, guardianship, trusts, and disability documents, such as financial and medical powers of attorney and "living wills."

REPTL Leadership Academy: We graduated our first class of the Leadership Academy in May 2017. The purpose of the program is designed to encourage the active involvement and participation of young lawyers in Section activities by giving them an opportunity to become involved in substantive work of the Section, by providing networking opportunities with practitioners from all over the state, by mentoring young attorneys to develop them into future leaders, and by promoting the Section through various projects and services. Eligible REPTL members may apply to be in the next Leadership Academy class with the application period opening in January of 2018 with the class beginning in August - September 2018.

Texas Title Examination Standards: REPTL, with the Oil, Gas & Energy Resources Law Section, co-sponsors the Texas Title Examination Standards Committee. This committee publishes the Texas Title Examination Standards which are published and widely used by the real estate members of the Section.

The 2017-2018 Officers of REPTL are:

Chair: Tina Green (903.223.9544)

Chair-Elect/Secretary: David Dickson (254.776.5500)
